In RE: Even Print is Black and White by Hope Ditto, I would say that discrimination is in the past. Racism and prejudice still exist, but the kind of systemic, official policy discrimination like the Jim Crow laws are but memories (some still strike a chord, however, with affirmative action laws). The problem of racism today is not in the system, but in the people. It is about attitudes and (mis)perceptions. The only thing stopping this country from electing a black or woman to the presidency is the lack of a viable candidate. We may have the first in the upcoming election, with strong numbers supporting Hillary and Obama.
But in the midst of all this, before everyone gets all self-righteous and high on themselves for overcoming racism, people need to determine if Hillary or Obama would make a good president. I'm not saying they wouldn't (indeed, I'm going to be silent on the matter all together), but there is a disturbing possibility that one or both (in a combined ticket) may be nominated as the Democratic party candidates, based solely, or largely, on their minority status. I want as much as the most ardent promoter and advocate of equal rights for this nation to overcome its distressing habit of racism, intolerance and hatred, to overcome its color-steeped vision and embrace colorblindness. But I don't want that so badly that I want a minority to be elected to the highest office in the land just to make a point. To be the token black president, or the token female president. Nothing would move forward, the bar would be set too high, and the presidency would probably end in failure (even if the candidate happened to be strong). The issue is not whether or not a woman or black man is capable of being president, most surely they are, but if a woman is elected for the sake of her being a woman, than her presidency would be a joke, she wouldn't be taken seriously, she'd just be a poster-girl for the politicians who come after her to capitalize on, and it might be years before another woman (or black man) is elected.
Instead, the way to move forward is to not try to elect the first woman or first black president. Don't talk about it, don't raise it as an issue or topic of discussion, treat it like a perfect game in baseball. If you mention that its a perfect game (popular wisdom holds) you will jinx it. I think that would be all the more true for the presidential election. If you focus on the race or sex of the candidates, you will make more of an issue out of it than it would be, and it will be less likely for anything to come of it.
How do we get the article more publicized and published? We need to do this asap. The sooner the less carnage the better. We need the world, especially policy makers in the United States and Europe to understand the depths of this paper.
